6/19: On the Comeback Trail

Hair-raising eggshell.

I definitely felt like I made progress today.  I still have a runny nose and an occassional cough, but I didn’t have a fever and I was in a pretty good mood all day.  Dad got up with me in the morning until Nana took over right after breakfast.  I ate a huge lunch after my nap and had a good time with Nana all afternoon.

I got up from my nap to see Mom (I had forgotten it was Friday!).  We went for a walk and then Dad took over when he was done working (and Mom took a well-deserved nap).

Last year I was getting shot up!

6/18: Tonsillitis – Hooray!!!

Bye-bye, doc!

I woke up doing really poorly.  My temperature was 103.4 and I was so lethargic.  All I wanted to do was lay on  Mom’s shoulder.  I barely moved.  Dad got a big bucket of ice-water and put freezing cold washcloths all over my body (two on my head and others on my neck, arms, legs, and back).  The Motrin at 7:00 am helped, but I was still totally out of it.  I had a doctor’s appointment at 10:45.  Mom, Dad, and Nana all went with me and I could tell they were very concerned.

I didn’t have to wait at all when I got in and I saw Dr. Kazdin again.  She took another flu test (came back negative) and checked out my ears (looking much better).  Nana was asking a lot of questions and Dr. Kazdin and given how she answered the questions, she clearly didn’t realize that Nana was a pediatrician.  Anyway toward the end of the examination, she looked in my throat and sure enough: puss!

YAY!!!  Mom, Dad, and especially Nana were so happy to here the news: tonsillitis!  Now, ordinarily kids  don’t celebrate  tonsillitis, but in this case, the cause of the fever had been identified.  Turns out I just got very unlucky, getting an ear infection, beating it, then getting tonsillitis the day after.  So,  rather than having something scary that caused a 12-day fever, I had two little  things back-to-back.

We haven’t shot any video in a while, so even though this isn’t great, I thought you’d like to see me:

The rest of the day was so much more relaxed.  Nana stayed until 3:00 and basically I sat in her lap and read until my nap.   Don’t forget that Mom’s still feeling terrible at this point, so Dad was on duty and Mom got some much deserved rest (except that her caugh made that really difficult.

A year ago I turned 100.

6/16 & 6/17: Take II

Pathetic!

Well, I was supposed to be all better today.  I would have even gone back to pre-school today, but Nana insisted that I stay home (and that she’d take care of me).  Well, the morning was great.  I was happy to see that Mom was working from home, but that was just because she wasn’t feeling well, so that was bad.

Everything changed after lunch.  My fever came back and Mom and Nana were very concerned and confused — I was supposed to be over the worst of my ear infection.  Nana refused to go home tonight and instead slept on the floor in my room.  She figured leaving two sick people alone wasn’t a good idea.  It was so nice of her to stay!

By the morning on Wednesday, I hadn’t improved at all.  Mom called my doctor’s office even before it opened and got me an appointment at 11:45 with Dr. Freeman (my usual doctor).  She agreed that something was definitely wrong, but confirmed that all of my tests from the emergency room on Friday were normal (for a sick person).  My ears were getting better and so it was mystery what was causing my fever.  She sent us back to Children’s Memorial Hospital for more tests.

At Children’s, the doctors repeated all of the tests from Friday (chest x-ray, blood and urine analysis) and sent us home. The docs were still confused, so they consulted with an infectious diseases specialist to see if I might have something exotic wrong with me.  They decided that they wanted to see me tomorrow to repeat the flu test.

Nana left at 3:00 and Dad was on his way home.  Mom and I went for a walk to pick up more coconut water, because it’s about the only liquid I would drink.  At dinner I had pretty bad chills — my lips, feet, and hands felt like ice cubes!  I was really struggling.  Dad got home  and Mom and I definitely felt better to have the whole family back together.

So, I went to bed feeling terrible and with some undiagnosed illness.  Hopefully the trip to the doctor’s office tomorrow will figure out what’s wrong with me!

6/15: My Head is Still Big

Helping to clean the fridge.

I got up on Monday to find a whole army of family members staying home with me today.  Both Mom & Dad worked from home and  Nana was here to take care of me.  I ate and played with Nana in the morning and then took my usual nap.

After I got up, Mom took me to see Nurse Practioner Hartman for a check-up on my ear infection.  Turns out my left ear is all good and my right ear was almost there.  In fact everything was going so well, that she went ahead and gave me my 15-month check-up, which Mom had rescheduled for this Friday.

The good news is that I’m doing great!  I weigh 24 lb., 11 oz. and I am 31.5″ long with a 19-inch head circumference.  That puts me in the 75th, 75th, and 95th percentiles, respectively.  And that’s after I’ve lost a little weight in the last few days. The only thing is that I couldn’t get my vaccinations, because I’m technically still sick.  So I’m coming back on Friday for some shots.

Nana was waiting for me when I got home and we resumed our playing and reading.  After my afternoon nap, Mom and Dad were ready to play with me — though Mom wasn’t feeling even worse than she did over the weekend.  After dinner, we all cleaned out the fridge before going to bed.

Check out Dad’s first father’s day.

What is Mom doing with her finger?

6/13 & 6/14: Lethargy Embodied

Ouuuh…Ouuh!

Saturday was one of the most pathetic things you’ll ever see.  Mom and I were completely out of it.  Dad was gone.  We just spent the day laying around doing nothing.  Nana & Grandpa brought over some much needed food, but other than that, nothing notable happened.

Sunday started out exciting when Dad got home at 7:00 AM.  Finally someone in the house who wasn’t sick!  We didn’t do much more, though we ventured out on a walk and picked up some coconut water from W Crossings Grocer, where I’d never been before.  There wasn’t much more to write about, except that I started making this face and saying “ouuuh, ouuuh” when I tried to reach out for things.

Oh the whole, though, by Sunday afternoon, things were looking up.  School on Tuesday will be easy-peasy!

Don’t mess with SuperMaggie!

6/11 & 6/12: Crappy Birthday!

Sitting-in-a-corner kind of day…

I turned 15 months old today, but I sure didn’t feel like celebrating!  I was at 5:45 feeling very sad and lethargic and looking very pathetic!  I had a fever and diarrhea.  A great birthday, right?

I laid down in my bet and then sat in the bathroom rocking with Mom.  At 7:00 I gtot my antibiotics ate a bit of breakfast (I refused to touch the egg.).  After breakfast Mom was still here and she just sat with me and rocked (and cleaned up my diarrhea).  At 8:00 Nana came over and Mom left for a short day at work.

I was pretty fussy with Nana but slept in her lap for almost two hours.  I woke up sweaty and hoarse.  I got my Motrin at 12:15 before eating some O’s and milk.  I felt a bit better and was for playing a bit and reading a few books.  I got cranky just before 2:00 and kept saying “up, up” to indicate that I wanted to go to sleep — which I did.

At 4:00 Mom got home and Nana left for some much-needed rest.  I cried non-stop (which I almost never do!) for half an hour.  Mom got me comforted and then I played and read for about an hour.  Then Mom and I watched Sesame Street videos until dinner.

I got my medicine just before 7:00 and was asleep by 7:30.  We were supposed to drive to Detroit (and meet Dad there) for a wedding, but obviously that wasn’t going to happen.  Fortunately, Mom’s off tomorrow.  I hope I feel better!

Well, I didn’t feel better.  I had a really rough night, and since Dad was at Chris’s and Cate’s wedding, Mom had a rough night all by herself. My fever kept going up.  I was really  unhappy and really uncomfortable.  I got a dose of Motrin at 3:45 AM, but by 6:00 the situation had deteriorated further.  I was fussy and unable to sleep and my fever kept going up.  Mom rocked me until I stopped crying, but then she realized that only wasn’t I crying, but I really wasn’t responding to any stimuli.  My arm-pit temperature was 102.8 and I wasn’t due for more Motirn for hours.

Mom called Nana, who suggested attacking my fever with Tylenol and wet wash cloths.  Finally, they decided to take me to the emergency room at Children’s Memorial Hospital.  Apparently you don’t have to get dressed up to go to the  hospital — I went in a clean  set of pajamas!  Nana and Grandpa met us there (though they decided not to wear their PJ’s!) A resident named Dr. Choi examined me, but didn’t really have a commanding presence.  He ordered a chest X-ray, a blood test, and a urine test, but wasn’t sure whether I need an IV. So, he called in the attending physician, Dr. Abujamra (turns out, she’s one of my peeps!).  She spent about two minutes with me. She lifted up my arm and watched it limply fall back to my side.  She called in the IV.  Within three minutes I was much happier.  I cooled down, was happier, and fell into a calm, restful sleep.

All my tests came back normal and the doctor gave me new a new antibiotic, Augmentin.  Mom and I went home while Nana and Grandpa went to pick up my prescription and some groceries.  The rest of the day was a blur for both me and Mom, made worse by the fact that she was getting sick, too, and Dad still wasn’t home!

6/9 & 6/10: Worst Days Ever?

 Uck.

Yesterday ended just fine, so Dad left for work as planned in the morning and Mom had planned to take me to Nana’s during her breakfast meeting and then head into pre-school a bit later than usual.  That was the plan.  Ha!

I woke up in a terrible mood — maybe as unhappy as I’ve ever been.  So bad, in fact, that Mom couldn’t take me to Nana’s and go to her breakfast meeting.  Instead, she had to cancel her meeting and stay home.  I was almost inconsolable.  Mom held me, rocked me, and sang to me — anything that might possibly calm and comfort me.  I refused to eat much of anything (except strawberries, of course).

Nana came over in the afternoon to help take care of me and to offer her expert opinion.  Around 2:30, Mom & Nana decided I should see my doctor.  The earliest appointment wasn’t until 7:30, so I spent the afternoon and evening just as unhappy as I was before.

When I finally saw Dr. Kazdin, she diagnosed me with infections in both ears, with hemorrhaging in one.  Well, it was good to get a diagnosis — and better to get medicine!  To make the day worse, we got stuck in the parking garage (I think Mom wanted to cry!) and then the pharmacy took 30 minutes to make my amoxicillan.  Along with the antibiotics, I also got motrin for my fever, which was cool (ha!).

Finally, the unhappy day ended with me falling asleep in my crib at 9:00.

I woke up Wednesday morning still sick, but feeling a bit better despite the discomfort of the amoxicillan-induced diarrhea.  Nana pretty much held me and gave me plenty of TLC today.

Mom gave me a bath, but my diarrhea didn’t really cooperate (feel free to provide your own imagery).   I hope this ends soon…I don’t think I’m going to make it to pre-school tomorrow.

Last year I was celebrating the end of a poop watch.

Poof!

6/8: Diaper Malfunction

Morning yoga while waiting to greet Nana

I got in a relatively good mood given how bad my weekend was.  It was a Monday and Dad was working from home, so I knew there wasn’t going to be any pre-school today (and I probably wasn’t really up for it).  I ate breakfast with Dad and I ate pretty well.  We played together and then I was getting really excited for Nana to come over, so I went to the door and said “Nana!”

Dad opened the door for me and I did some yoga waiting for her to come.  We played all morning, with the usual reading and other fun.  The day was pretty uneventful except that one of the times Dad came upstairs to play with me during the day, I had a “diaper malfunction” that resulted in my poop leaking through:

  • My diaper
  • My pants
  • Dad’s shirt
  • Dad’s shorts
  • Dad’s underwear

And all the way to his skin!  You can imagine the process that went into cleaning that up.  Dad ended up taking a shower.

By the time the day ended I wasn’t feeling great, but I wasn’t feeling terrible, either.

Last year I learned how to shriek!

You know you want a bite of this delicacy!

6/7: I’m Feeling “Uck”

I’m rich!

I didn’t have the best night, waking up a few times.  I started to run a fever and I woke up in a really bad mood.  I read with Mom while Dad was having breakfast with Conor’s dad.  I took a pretty short nap but wasn’t in much of a mood to do anything when I got up, so I hung out with Mom in her bed until 10:30.  When Dad got home I played with him until we all went to Nana’s and Grandpa’s for lunch.  As always, I loved the food that Nana made for me!

We left a bit early so that we could go shoe shopping for me.  Nana recommended that I get better shoes now that I’m roaming about more.  Apparently these shoes are hard to find, so we went all the way up to this little boutique, where, unfortunately, I had a total meltdown.  I felt like terrible!

I fell asleep in the car on the ride home and then continued my nap at home.  When I woke up me fever hadn’t really subsided and I  was pretty fussy.  I ate well and slept early, hoping to start the week feeling better.

A year ago I was on my longest poop-watch ever!

Blood rushing to my head!

6/6: Teething, Again.

Drops Away!

I got up with Mom (Dad was on his way back from his college reunion) and we played downstairs.  I even got to help make a pie for Dad (which she owed him for a bet that she lost).  We were waiting for Dad when he got home around 8:45.

We got our stuff ready and Dad and I went on our weekly trip to the grocer store.  We got back home, picked up Mom, and went to Target, where I got to buy a swimsuit and a pair of sunglasses.  Fancy that!  It was 12:15 before we made it back home and I was hungry.  I had lunch and took a good 2-hour nap.

I woke up not feeling too well (and neither was Mom for that matter).  As usual, everyone decided that I was teething.  The rest of the day was pretty uneventful.  I got a bath and went to bed, hoping to feel better in the morning.

A year ago I showed tremendous coordination!

All clean!
